Exposing 4 Shutter Myths
We do a lot of speaking with homeowners about shutters in Phoenix.
And although it may come as a surprise, when we speak to homeowners around Valley of the Sun, we hear the same couple of shutter myths floating around. We want to take a few moments to set the facts straight and expose some common myths about plantation shutters so that you can make the best choice for your house when it comes time for new window treatments.
Myth: Shutters Are Simple to DIY
Many home improvement projects can easily be done by yourself in just one day. Installing shutters probably isn’t one of them, however.
Putting in new shutters can be hard from the get-go, as the measurements of the dimensions of your windows must be incredibly precise to ensure a smooth and snug fit, as well as to ensure that your windows can still operate. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting large shutter panels and installing them straight can be a difficult job. If just one step of the process is done incorrectly, you may end up with uneven shutters or frequent drafts from weather-stripping that doesn’t fit.
Myth: Shutters Will Make The Home Look Dim
Some home designers might opt out of shutters, claiming shutters will make houses look dark or dim. This myth probably comes from being unfamiliar with interior shutters.
Think about this: light from the sun will always enter into your home at an angle. An interior shutter will give you the ability to change that angle by adjusting their louvers, giving you more effective control over how much light comes inside. And remember, shutters are able to swing open all the way to let in all the light you could want.
Myth: Shutters Cost a Lot
It’s a fact that shutters won’t be as cheap as your run of the mill blinds from a home improvement store. However this myth is all about how you think about shutters. If you think about them just as a plain decoration that isn’t expected to survive more than a few years, then yes, shutters are a tad expensive. But shutters are a permanent part of your home, and offer several benefits: they’re energy efficient and are proven to lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can increase your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last a lifetime, unlike blinds–which will need to be replaced repeatedly throughout the years.
Myth: Shutters Make a House Look Old
Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has caused the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it definitely isn’t true. While shutters were seen often in older home styles throughout the years, their straight, clean geometry and neutral colors makes it so they fit in just as easily with more fashionable, modern designs. Shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
